Visit of Dr Sang Won Yoon from Binghamton University

Prof Sang Won Yoon from Binghamton University, New York, USA visited Nirma University campus during November 11 – 15, 2019. His visit was planned under Faculty Exchange activity under MoU between Nirma University and Binghamton University with a primary objective of teaching various techniques for Mathematical Modelling and optimization techniques to students of M Tech (Computer Science Engineering), and their real-life application in live projects. This visit enabled the students to experience international teaching methodology with several research problems and approaches to handle them using elements of Optimization techniques.

Prof. Yoon covered a few modules of Applied Mathematics for Computer Science course to M Tech Semester I (CSE). The topics he covered are part of the syllabus and will be included in the examination for the assessment. There were interactive sessions with other students of B Tech CSE and MCA. Prof. Yoon also discussed his industry projects and interdisciplinary work with the faculty members of the institute. He also interacted with the Center of Excellence (CoE) in Data Science team of faculty members of CSE Department.

Brief Profile of Professor Yoon:
Prof. Yoon is the recipient of the SUNY Chancellor?s Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities in 2019 and a highly successful researcher who leads many productive long-term industry collaborations. As an Associate Professor of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering at State University of New York at Binghamton, he directs the Complex System Design and Analysis Laboratory and is a faculty member of the Watson Institute for Systems Excellence. Prof. Yoon leads collaborations with faculty, staff, students, and industry partners, and has secured over $6 million to fund more than 60 industrial projects. Prof. Yoon has published in over 130 internationally renowned journals and conference proceedings. He was also a member of the Data Science Transdisciplinary Area of Excellence (TAE) initiative and is an active member of the Health Sciences TAE at his institution.
